Residence permit
There are different rules depending on what citizenship you have:
- Nordic citizen
- EU-citizen
- Citizen form outside the Nordic and EU countries
1. Nordic citizens
Nordic citizens from Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden can enter and reside in Denmark without a
passport or residence permit. 2.
EU-citizens
EU citizens who will study in Denmark have to
apply for a residence permit to study in Denmark before they travel to
Denmark.
You can see the rules from the Danish Immigration Service at
http://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_dk/studies/how_to_apply.htm
The following is the new rules in force from March 2008
How to apply
If you wish to apply for a residence permit as a student, both you and
the educational institution in Denmark must supply information for the
processing of your application.
The application form contains a detailed description of how you and the
educational institution should complete the form, and which documents
you must attach.
It is the educational institution in Denmark who begins the application
process by completing his/her part of the application form and attaching
the required documents. He/she sends or gives the form and attached
documents to you. Then you complete your part of the form, attach the
required documents, and submit the entire application.
- Everything should be clarified with Odder
Hojskole and the total study fee has to be paid by you and/or
grant-scholarship.
- Odder Hojskole send you the necessary
application form (ST1) by normally post. Odder Hojskole has
completed our part of the form
- You have to apply to a Danish Representative Office in your country.
- When you apply you should bring:
- The application form
- Your passport
- Copy of your passport (all pages including front page) - Two passport pictures - The official
application form ST1 from the Danish Immigration Service which Odder Hojskole
has send to you with the school part completed.
NB. When you are studying at
a Danish Folk High School everything concerning education, meals and
accommodation is paid. You do NOT need any more documentation that the
applicant has enough money to live on.
The processing time for the application can be long and often some months.
You can travel to Denmark and start at the school even you have not
received the answer from the Danish Immigration Service yet. The
important thing is that you have applied before you travel to Denmark.
It is a good idea to apply as soon as possible.
If you are living in Denmark, when you apply for the study at Odder
Hojskole, you can apply for the residence permit to study at the Danish
Immigration Service in Copenhagen or at a local police office in
Denmark.
An EU citizen can travel to and
reside freely in Denmark for up to 3 months. But when you will study
in Denmark you need to apply for residence permit before you travel. 3. Citizens from outside the
Nordic and the EU countries.
Students need a residence permit and not a VISA.
A foreigner must have a residence permit in order to attend a
course at a Danish Folk High School. In order to obtain a permit, the
applicant must state that:
- he or she is enrolled at an approved Danish Folk High School
- he or she has paid the course fees,
- he or she can speak and understand English at reasonable
proficiency.
How long time are residence permits issued for?
As a rule, course participants at Danish Folk High Schools are granted
residence permits strictly for the duration of the course, and for a
maximum of one year at a time. The course participant can apply for an
extension of his or her residence permit, but only for a total maximum
of 18 months.
Where to submit an application?
As a rule, a residence permit must be received prior to a foreigner's
entry into Denmark. An application for a residence permit must
therefore be submitted in the applicant's country of origin.
Processing time.
If an applicant has enclosed all necessary documentation with an
application, he or she can expect a response to the application for a
residence permit within an average of 2-3 months.
A residence permit does not grant the right to work in Denmark
