Description of the subjects

All the subjects that will be taught in English or both in Danish and English
 

  1. Accessories
    With a lot of different materials we will make “trinket” for your clothing and your surrounds. Gadgets, brooches, chains, belts, shawls, bags and … You have to find the ideas and sketch it out.
     
  2. Badminton
    Mostly for beginners, yet still room for more advanced. Fun games although serious practice.
     
  3. Beginners music
    Mostly for beginners, or try a new instrument.
     
  4. Choir
    The voice is an instrument that quickly improves by the very use of it. We’ll sing different styles: rock folk, jazz, and Danish songs. We work on body posture, breathing plus other techniques and we will perform a proper voice warm-up every time.
  1. Clothing design
    We will work with the whole process. From inspiration through sketch and drawing to cutting and sewing.
    You will learn about: Trend and sources of inspiration, drawing and illustration, measuring, construction of patterns, sewing technique.
  1. Creativity and Form
    We will try to find a personal expression for your own opinion about the pictures, shapes and colours we see at the most fascinating masters of art. You will learn the necessary technique for painting, drawing and modelling working with acrylic, chalk, coal, Indian ink, pencil, clay, wax, metal and plaster. Psychologically problems can be understood on the intellectual level but here you will have the possibility with your sense organs to discover and understand what we as human beings contain.
     
  2. Dance, Practical dance
    The basics will be trained in Free dance, Choreographed dance and Improvised dance. Wee will dance a lot of different dances from the whole world: Samba, Rueda de Casino, Son, Salsa, Chachacha, Palo, Makuta, Rumba, Hip-hop and MTV-dance. Everybody can participate just you are open minded and desire to go in the body and the music.
     
  3. Dance and body-posture
    We are working with dance theory: body-posture, suppleness, balance, expression, energy and strength.
     
  4. Danish culture
    The class will provide you with the introduction to a great number of different aspects of the multiple Danish Culture. Subjects in the class will be: history, culture, politics, education system, welfare- and tax, famous Danes and a lot more. We will discus and compare the countries the students come from.
    There will be excursions to visit companies or institutions such as Aarhus University, the Newspaper "Jyllandsposten", the local government office and the dairy Arla Foods.
    This class is compulsory for International students.
     

  5. Danish language
    It’ll give you a brief introduction to the language. We will both work with the textbook with reading, writing and of course speaking. And some grammar. There will be some games incorporated too. And we’ll take some trips out into cafés or the likes for practice.

  1. Design
    We’ll view the designer’s process from idea to a final product. What is a trend? How does a trend influence us and how do we transfer it into a product? The psychology of colours, how the colours are used in the product and what affect they have upon us. Different tasks, such as modelling, will take place in the classes.
  1. Drawing and Graphic
    Everything starts with the pencil, the drawing charcoal, the chalk and the Indian ink that meets the paper. It is in the process of drawing the ideas will be born and have a visual form. The good drawing is both the basic for a lot of creative processes and a goal by itself. In the class you will have a presentation of the classically techniques and drawing material step by step; and the graphic techniques as etching and linocut.
     
  2. Ensemble playing-music
    Our goal is to make a band. We play most rock, soul and pop. There will be elementary exercises in pulse and rhythmic and you will learn about music system with scales, key signature and chords.
    To be in this class it is necessary that you can sing or play a little on an instrument.
     

  3. Film history
    This class will be about the history of film and television. We will try to give you the theoretically base so you can understand the magi, fascination and style.
     

  4. Guitar
    You start on level 1, where you learn how to hold the guitar and will receive the first fistful of grips, so that you can play along with the most known sing along songs.
    Or you play on level 2, where you will have your number of grips expanded plus be playing melody tunes.

  1. Model drawing
    We will work with life drawing, dressed model and drapery in drawing and colour.
     
  2. Painting and art history
    You need no preferences at all, only the desire to work with colours. Maybe you’ll work on set-ups, self portraits, other artist’s pictures or something completely different - the number of possibilities is endless. The main material is acryl.
    The history of European painting with detours to architecture and design. We will dive into the artists' life and works and learn to see the beauty and strength in those pictures that might provoke or disgust at first glance or simply just seem strange.
     
  3. Photography
    In the class we refine the process from an idea to a final picture. On a modern camera it’s easy to push release, but it may be difficult to make a photo that meets your own expectations. We’ll learn different techniques, processing and developing in black-and-white. Part of the class will be taken by various projects followed by discussions, e.g. Portrait/Self portrait, Weird angles.
    We work with analogue cameras, film and the analog traditional processes.
     
  4. Pottery
    We enter the discovery of clay. Here you’ll have the opportunity to work with spinners, modelling and on various projects. We try out many different expressions the clay contains and we take the pottery process step by step, including glazing and burning. With the starting point of the potters` traditions, ideas and techniques we seek to create the personal expression. We have two ovens that you’ll learn both to fill up and empty. Besides, we’ll work on simple bonfire techniques.
     
  5.  Singing and voice building
    For more advanced. We focus on breathing, body posture and diaphragm support. We work both solos as more voices with an angular approach such as text or intonation.
     

  6. Sport training
    Get fit at Odder Hojskole! It’s physical, it’s tough and it’s fun. We jog, we lift and we play. We run in the forest, we do weightlifting and we play various games to improve strength, condition and coordination. Furthermore, we’ll discuss theory on sport and health aspects.

  1. Swimming
    You’ll learn to swim better. All four disciplines- breaststroke, back, crawl and butterfly will be taught and you’ll get some little tricks for own practice and maintenance of skills. You’ll learn both to do small programs and to make your own, so it is possible to do more than just back and forth the lane. Moreover, it’s a good exercise and a great start for a day! If anyone wants lifesaving, that’s possible as well.
     
  2. The school for Film and TV-production
    This is 12 hours every week and is divided in "Sound, Light and moving" and "The camera at work".  There will be a going through of the basic camera technique and the good history. We will work with sound, light and editing. We are surrounded by good stories and some of us have stories to tell ourselves. It can be news, advertising film, documentary film and fiction.
     
  3. The school for Outdoor life & Adventure
    This is 12 hours every week.
    You will meet challenges in many levels, but everything will have its root in nature. You will be working with your personal powers of behaving in nature. You’ll learn techniques, and achieve skills, so that your joy and ability of staying in nature will exceed, and you’ll develop more knowledge at understanding the relation of people and nature.
    In the subject outdoor life we’ll work at combining athletics and nature. Primary we’ll be working with physical challenges in nature like canoe, kayak, orienteering, climbing on walls and in trees, mountain bike etc. During this, you’ll also get theoretical knowledge of the possibilities at sea, according to the sea sport council of acts, and to the rules for activities in nature etc. Secondary we’ll be camping and living in nature e.g. building fire, cooking dinner and spending nights outside. During this you’ll learn first aid, camping planning etc.
    Finally we’ll try to attach cultural understanding and biology in the classes.
  1. Volleyball
    It’s a great social game; you have to cooperate with your neighbours.  Yes, we do warm up every time. That might even be fun as you get a bit sweaty. You’ll improve your coordination. Some say you’ll get nice legs. You’ll learn the basic of the game before we take you into the court, and then you’ll discover the true spirit of teamwork.
     
  2. Yoga
    For body awareness, relaxation and flexibility. We work our way through relaxing and stretching exercises for the whole body, so that you’ll be able to make your own programme.
