Danish Folk High Schools
Description is made by The Association of Folk High Schools in Denmark.
Freedom to learn – freedom to explore
A stay at a Folk High School gives you a possibility to move on in
life – in education, in your professional life and personally. A stay at
a Folk High School combines the vocational education with personal and
social experiences.
It is an education without exams but filled with substance.
The Folk High Schools are free adult boarding schools offering teaching
in almost all subjects including history, arts, music, sports, philosphy,
theatre, photography etc. The schools offer you freedom to learn and
explore yourself and the world.
The Danish name for a Folk High School is 'folkehojskole' which has
nothing to do with High Schools.
For a Dane, Folk High School signifies both a historical movement and
a
modern educational institution for life-long popular education and
learning. The Folk High School enlightens people and trains for
democracy, and it probably signifies the single most original
contribution Denmark has made to international thinking about popular
education.
Everybody can attend at the commencement of the course, and students
may come from all parts of the world. A majority of the students at a
specific course are Danish citizens.
There are around 90 Folk High Schools in Denmark. They are a
recognised supplement to the formal education system. In addition to
specific themes, the Folk High Schools teach their students how to be
active citizens of the world. The subjects offered by the schools will
be attractive, life at the schools will be characterised by free
thinking.
